It was at this time that the
Vaikkom satyagraha began, which attracted widespread national attention.
It was launched to give the low-caste people the right to walk on
the public road leading to the temple, to which they had been denied
entry. The Vaikom satyagraha is very important among the peaceful
struggles marked the beginning of the end of untouchability in Kerala.
Gurudev blessed the satyagrahis and gave for their use the Vellur
Mutt at Vaikom which was then at his disposal.
The prime force behind the Vaikom satyagraha was Gurudev's beloved
disciple, the patriot, T.K. Madhavan. In September 1924 Gurudev
visited the satyagraha ashram and blessed the Satyagrahis.
The launch of this satyagraha saw Mahatma Gandhi come to Kerala
for the first time. He came to Sivagiri and called on Gurudev. That
visit helped him greatly to correct his rather orthodox notions
about caste system. Afterwards he told a meeting at Trivandrum that
it was his good fortune to have met Gurudev.
Gandhiji visited Kerala twice after Sree Narayana Guru's mahasamadhi.
On these occasions (in 1934 and 1937) he came to Sivagiri and offered
obeisance to the memory of the Guru.

In a speech made at Sivagiri in 1937 Gandhiji said, "I realized
clearly that the words of Sree Narayana Guru came from the tongue
of a true saint. I studied them with reverence. I have accommodated
them as far as I could."On September 27, 1927 at Sarada Mutt
at Sivagiri Guru anointed his beloved disciple Sree Bodhananda Swamikal
as his successor. In October 1925 Gurudev laid the foundation stone
for the Brahma Vidyalaya at Sivagiri.
In May 1926 Gurudev made his will and testament. According to this
will, which was conceived in a democratic-spirit, the succession
rights to all his movable and immovable properties are vested with
the groups of sanyasins who belong to the line of his disciples.
Necessary legal provisions for this purpose have been incorporated
into the will.In 1926 Gurudev's beloved disciple Sree Sathyavratha
Swamikal attained samadhi. Sathyavratha Swamikal who took the message
of Sree Narayana Guru to the hearts of the people was an extraordinarily
powerful orator and organizer who had received Gurudev's blessings
in full measure.
"Sathyavartha has departed as a true devotee of sathya (truth),"said
Gurudev on the occasion of his samadhi.
A fascinating footnote is that at a time when caste system was
rife in Kerala Satyavartha Swamikal who had come form a high-caste
family, had joined Sree Narayana Guru, to become one of his greatest
disciples.
